What is hormone replacement therapy?
Hormone replacement therapy, or HRT, replaces the estrogen (and often progesterone) your body makes less of during perimenopause and menopause. Restoring these hormones eases symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, and sleep and mood changes, and helps protect your bones. A licensed provider decides which type and dose fit your health, then prescribes it. HRT is also called menopausal hormone therapy.
안 · Signs You May Need HRT
What are the signs you may need HRT?
If menopause symptoms are disrupting your sleep, mood, or daily life, hormone therapy may help. A provider can tell whether your symptoms fit and whether treatment is right for you. Common signs include:
- Hot flashes and night sweats
- Trouble sleeping
- Mood changes, irritability, or brain fog
- Vaginal dryness or discomfort during sex
- Irregular periods or changes during perimenopause
- Lower bone density or early menopause (before age 45)
How is low testosterone diagnosed?
A provider matches the type and dose to your symptoms and health history. The main options are:
Systemic estrogen
Estrogen delivered to the whole body as a pill, patch, gel, spray, or ring. It treats hot flashes, night sweats, and other menopause symptoms and helps protect bone.
Low-dose vaginal estrogen
A cream, tablet, or ring used for vaginal dryness and urinary symptoms. Very little estrogen reaches the bloodstream, so it does not carry the same whole-body risks as systemic estrogen.
Estrogen plus progesterone
If you still have your uterus, a provider adds progesterone (a progestogen) to protect the uterine lining, because estrogen alone can raise the risk of uterine cancer. Women without a uterus usually use estrogen alone.

Is HRT safe, and does
it cause cancer?
For many healthy women who start within 10 years of menopause or before age 60, the benefits of HRT can outweigh the risks, and a provider weighs this with you. In November 2025, the FDA moved to remove the long-standing boxed warning from estrogen products and add age-specific labeling. Real risks still remain and depend on your health: HRT can raise the chance of blood clots and stroke, and estrogen combined with a progestogen, used longer term, is linked to a small increase in breast cancer risk. Estrogen taken without a progestogen raises uterine cancer risk in women who have a uterus, which is why the two are prescribed together. Low-dose vaginal estrogen carries much lower whole-body risk. Your provider reviews your history and helps you choose the lowest effective dose.
Who should not use HRT
HRT is not right for everyone. Tell your provider if you have a history of breast or other hormone-sensitive cancer, blood clots or a clotting disorder, stroke or heart attack, liver disease, unexplained vaginal bleeding, or if you are or might be pregnant. A provider screens for these before prescribing.

What is bioidentical
hormone therapy?
Bioidentical hormones have the same chemical structure as the hormones your body makes. Some are FDA-approved and widely used, such as estradiol and micronized progesterone. Others are custom-mixed by compounding pharmacies. Major medical groups recommend FDA-approved options first, because they are tested for dose and consistency. A Telean Rx provider will explain which option fits you and be clear about what is FDA-approved and what is compounded.

How long does HRT take to work?
Many women notice hot flashes and night sweats easing within a few weeks, and the full effect on sleep, mood, and vaginal symptoms usually builds over about two to three months. Your provider starts you at a low effective dose and adjusts based on how you respond. HRT manages symptoms rather than curing menopause, so a provider reviews with you how long to continue.

Frequently asked questions
What does HRT stand for?
HRT stands for hormone replacement therapy. It replaces estrogen, and often progesterone, that the body makes less of during perimenopause and menopause, to ease symptoms and protect bone.
What are the signs I need HRT?
Common signs include hot flashes, night sweats, poor sleep, mood changes or brain fog, vaginal dryness, and irregular periods during perimenopause. A provider confirms whether hormone therapy is appropriate for you.
Is HRT safe?
For many women who start within 10 years of menopause or before age 60, the benefits can outweigh the risks. HRT still carries risks like blood clots and stroke, and a small increase in breast cancer risk with longer-term estrogen-plus-progestogen use. A provider reviews your history first.
Does HRT cause cancer?
The relationship is nuanced. Estrogen plus a progestogen, used longer term, is linked to a small rise in breast cancer risk. Estrogen without a progestogen raises uterine cancer risk in women with a uterus, which is why they are prescribed together. Your provider weighs your personal risk with you.
What is bioidentical hormone therapy?
Bioidentical hormones match the structure of your body’s own hormones. Some, like estradiol and micronized progesterone, are FDA-approved. Your provider will recommend the option that fits you.
How long does HRT take to work?
Many women feel hot flashes and night sweats ease within a few weeks, with the fuller effect over two to three months as the dose is adjusted.
How much does it cost, and do I need insurance?
